The still-afternoon problem
A closed or shaded roof stops the sun, and it also stops the breeze. On a still August afternoon on a Traverse City deck, the shade from a closed louvered roof isn't actually why people stay outside. Moving air is.
That's the case for a ceiling fan in a covered structure that a fan out in an open backyard doesn't have. Without a roof overhead there's nowhere to hang one. With one, the fan is doing a job the roof itself can't do on its own.

A fan here hangs from the frame itself, set clear of the blade run so nothing catches when the louvers open and close. The downrod length gets matched to the beam height, not picked off a shelf and hoped for.
It's also rated for an outdoor, damp location, which isn't the same fan sold for a living room ceiling. Northern Michigan humidity, plus a screened but still open-air structure, will find the difference within a season.
Chapter 03
Where it gets done badly
The two mistakes we see most are a fan sized for an indoor bedroom hung in a bay twice that width, and a fan mounted so low it sits right in the eye line of anyone at the table.
Both are avoidable at the planning stage, before the beam it hangs from ever gets set.
What it pairs with, and what it doesn't
Closed roof plus a moving fan is the right answer to a hot, still afternoon. The roof keeps the sun off and the fan keeps the air from going stale. That's the pairing worth having.
Fan and heater running the same evening isn't. One's job is moving air, the other's is holding warmth still against the seats, and running both at once just fights itself.
