Why a moving roof, and why here
A fixed pergola gives you one shade pattern and lives with whatever the sky does that day. In Northern Michigan the sky does something different by the hour: a clear morning off the bay can turn to a squall by early afternoon, and the wind that comes with it does not announce itself first. A deck built around a fixed roof or no roof at all tends to get used for a stretch in July and August and sit empty the rest of the year, maybe eight weeks of real use out of twelve months of Michigan weather.
A louvered roof changes that math because it is not one shade pattern, it is three. Open for the mornings when the sun is worth sitting in. Angled for the afternoons when it is not. Closed and sealed when the wind turns and the rain follows it in off the water, which around here can happen with very little warning. Add the screens for the wind itself and the heat for the shoulder months, and the same deck that used to close for the season in September is still getting used in October.
Everything specified into one frame
The posts, base plates and header beams go in first, levelled on the deck while the roof is still open to the sky. That is the point where the lighting, the screens and the heat get decided, because the wiring and the tracks for all of it run inside the beams. Planned before the blades go on, it stays invisible. Chased through a finished structure afterwards, it does not.
The blade run goes in bay by bay after that, set square rather than close enough, because the pitch is what gets adjusted for the next twenty years. Once the frame, the drive and everything specified into it are in place, the whole system is commissioned and walked through in front of the homeowner: open, angled, closed, screens down, lights on. If it does not do all of that cleanly, it is not finished.
