How one of these gets built
The order below is not a brochure sequence. It is why the wiring is invisible, why the blades sit square, and why nothing gets bolted onto the outside of a beam afterwards.

Posts, base plates and header beams are set and levelled on the deck with the roof still open to the sky. Every run for the lighting, the screens and the heat is decided at this point, because it lives inside the beams and there is no chasing it later.

Extruded aluminium louvers are racked into the frame in bays. Their pitch is what you will be adjusting for the next twenty years, so the blade ends and pivots are set square rather than close enough.

Drive, controls, screens, lighting and heat are commissioned together and run through once in front of you. Open, angled, closed, screens down, lights on. If it does not do all five cleanly, it is not finished.
Five things, and only five
This is the whole list. Everything on it goes into the same structure, specified together, which is the only reason the wiring and the tracks end up out of sight.
The roof
Aluminium blades that pivot from open sky to weather-tight at the touch of a button. Sun when you want it, shade when you need it, a sealed roof when the rain comes across the bay.

Warm linear fixtures set into the underside of the beams, wired inside the frame, so the room reads as a room after the sun has gone.

Radiant heat mounted flush under the beam, pointed at the seats rather than the sky. The reason a Northern Michigan deck still gets used in October.

Still air
A wide outdoor fan hung between the rafters. With the louvers closed on a still August afternoon, it is the difference between sitting out and going in.
How it worksOpen the end of one
Pull the cap off the end of a louvered beam and there is a drive rail, a linkage arm and a pivot for every blade, all of it inside an anodised aluminium section on stainless fasteners. That is what you are buying. Not a shade sail on a motor, and not something bolted to the underside of a wooden pergola.
It is also why the frame gets planned before the blades: the linkage, the screen tracks, the light runs and the heater mounts all want space inside the structure, and they only get it if somebody asked for it on day one.
